The latest crop of Comsa has finally arrived!
This March we had the opportunity to visit with a few of our farmer partners in the Comsa Cooperative in Marcala, Honduras and to see the absolute massive operation of exporting green coffee that they accomplish each year. Cooperative Coffees members import 2 millions pounds from Comsa annually!
Organic & Regenerative Agriculture:
Comsa is a leading example in regenerative agriculture and restorative biodynamic farming practices. They teach the philosophy of the Five M’s
1. Matter
Organic matter like compost and plant residue that enriches the soil with nutrients and structure.
2. Minerals
Naturally occurring elements like volcanic soil or rock dust that boosts plant health without the use of chemical fertilization.
3. Microbiology
Beneficial fungi, bacteria, and other microorganisms that break down organic matter and protect crops.
4. Molecules
The formation of complex organic compounds like amino acids and proteins that arise when soil biology is thriving with help from the previous three M’s.
5. Grey Matter
The farmer’s instinct, creativity, and commitment, underscoring the human element in the process.
Fairtrade™ Premiums At Work
Comsa has used the premiums gained from each pound of Fairtrade™ coffee ($0.20/lb) to create deep and lasting change in their city and region. They have invested in a recycling center that transforms plastic waste collected in the area into fence posts! They have also invested in a revolutionary school for farmers’ children to attend free of charge.
Coop Coffees purchases of Fairtrade™ certified coffees provide a whopping $400,000 a year for the Comsa cooperative to use at their discretion for any project they see fit.
